Blogathon Day 16 - Pool of Information

So, that's the first day of the course done and we've all been given enough information to make sure we never go in a public pool again. It's all you lot's fault and your dirty habits. Tomorrow we are going to discuss the treatment of water where diarrhoea may have been a contaminant. I'm not sure many of us will be having much lunch!

Here's a couple of bits of information for you -

If your local pool still has a footbath, and it really shouldn't, avoid it like the plague, otherwise that might be what you catch.

If every pool user actually did shower before they went in the pool, as they are meant to, then pool contamination would be minimal and you'd all have a much nicer time. And it tends to be the adults rather than the children who don't pre-shower on the way into the pool.

Who knows, I may regurgitate more disgusting facts for you tomorrow!

I'm afraid you are only confirming what I already suspected: that it's not so much a pool as a bacteria-ridden soup.

So, why do I always drink so much of it when I go swimming?

I know. And all the contaminants are in the top 6 inches of water. To be fair, most UK pools are going to be pretty safe. Some that you might come across on holiday, less so. You will always know if you have a pool technician on holiday at your hotel. He'll be the one testing the water and desperately trying to drop chlorine tablets into the water surreptitiously. That or wearing a full protective body suit. That would be the pool to avoid!

Urgh.

I remember swimming in a pool in Kenya: the first week the water was lovely and blue and inviting and the only thing you had to avoid whilst swimming was getting a mouthful of cockroach... there were loads of 'em in the pool.
The second week, the pool went so green that even the cockroaches were giving it a wide berth!

It's just as well that I don't go to pools then, they sound disgusting!
